Energy Management and Control of a Flywheel Storage System for Peak Shaving Applications

Peak shaving applications provided by energy storage systems enhance the utilization of existing grid infrastructure to accommodate increased penetration renewable sources. This work investigates provision peak services from a flywheel system installed in transformer substation. A lexicographic optimization scheme is formulated define power set-points minimizing limit violations and losses. Convex functions that represent losses its maximum are derived integrated proposed scheme. two-level hierarchical control framework introduced operate transformer-flywheel-system way handles prediction errors modelling inaccuracies. At higher level, model predictive controller developed solves using linear programming. lower-level, secondary corrects real-time measurements. software platform has been for integrating controllers an experimental setup test their effectiveness realistic testbed setting, characteristics experimentally identified. Simulation results validate verify modeling, identification, operation real services.
